It's Official...PIAA to Stay with Four Playoff Classes in Football

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control followed the lead of the Strategic Planning Committee and voted down a proposal to expand the state football playoffs from four to six classes. That proposal would have also cut the season from 16 to 15 weeks. Today's vote means the season will remain at sixteen weeks through the 2011 season.

Thumbs Down on Pennsylvania Plan to Expand High School Football Playoffs

It looks like the PIAA will stick with the state's current four class high school football playoff system. The PIAA strategic planning committee has voted against a plan to expand the playoffs by two classifications for the 2010 season. The recommendation now goes to the Board of Control, which rarely goes against what the planning committee recommends.

Hershey Names New Head Football Coach

For the first time in 33-seasons, Hershey will have a new head football coach. In the wake of Bob "Gump" May's retirement at the end of May, Mark Painter has been named interim head coach for the 2009 season. Painter was on May's staff and last served as a head coach at Lower Dauphin earlier in the decade.

New Football Program Out West

Since former Pitt head coach Foge Fazio is overseeing the start-up of the new football program at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in suburban Pittsburgh, it should come as no surprise that former Pitt quarterback Bill Daniels is the program's new head coach. Daniels played for the Panthers in the 70's.

The OLSH Chargers will begin playing varsity ball in 2010. According to the school's website, this is the first time in 45 years that a new high school football program is being created by an established western PA school.
