Former Erie Cathedral Prep Football Coach Mina George Passes Away

Mina George, who amassed a 230-126-2 record as a head football coach at several schools, including Erie Cathedral Prep, passed away Sunday.

The Times News in Erie reports that George, who was scheduled to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Hall of Fame on June 19th, was known for his tough, hard-nosed football teams.  George was 63 years old.

Pennsylvania Approves More Contact During Off-Season Football Practice

It looks like spring practice won't be coming to the Keystone State anytime soon, but the state's governing body is trying to split the difference.

Earlier this week, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association voted in favor of a new rule that will allow teams to have more contact during off-season workouts.  The rule allows teams to use blocking and tackling sleds during off-season workouts, plus allow them to practice "form" tackling and blocking.

In the spring, the PIAA approved rules that allowed teams to use helmets and shoulder pads in off-season workouts and at 7-on-7 competitions.

Serra Catholic Head Football Coach Resigns

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Serra Catholic head coach Rich Bowen has resigned.

Bowen, who had two stints as SC's head coach, will become a full-time assistant coach at Waynesburg University.
