Brockway QB Sets Single-Game Passing Record with 594 Yards

It took a call from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sunday for Brockway senior quarterback Derek Buganza to know that his 594-yards passing on Friday night was a single-game record in Pennsylvania. According to the Post-Gazette, Buganza completed 33 of 45 passes, and tossed six TDs in Brockway's 74-28 win over Otto-Eldred. The old record was 511 set by Downingtown East's Pat Devlin in 2003.

St. Joseph's Prep got revenge on LaSalle Saturday night, ending a brutal week for the state's top-ranked AAAA schools. Prep, which had its 55-game regular season Philadelphia Catholic League win streak snapped by the Explorers last year, beat the #1 ranked team in the Patriot-News rankings 24-17 Saturday night at Plymouth Whitemarsh. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Hawks stormed back from a 17-0 deficit after LaSalle scored on its first three possessions.

This weekend saw #1 LaSalle, #6 Neshaminy, #7 Central Dauphin and #8 Upper St. Clair all lose. Although LaSalle lost to #7 St. Joe's and Central Dauphin lost to #2 Bishop McDevitt.

Time to give the little guys a little "pub" today. In the battle of AA powers out west last night #1 Beaver Falls beat #2 Aliquippa 21-14. It was a rematch of the WPIAL championship game won by Aliquippa last season 8-6. Bishop McDevitt junior quarterback Matt Johnson had his hand in six of Crusaders seven touchdowns Saturday in a 49-7 win over Cedar Cliff. According to the Patriot-News, Johnson threw for four TDs and ran for two more as the Crusaders moved to 2-0 on the season.

Three of the four #1 teams in the Patriot-News opened the season with wins to maintain their positions in the first regular season poll. Clairton, the pre-season top dawg in A, lost to Laurel 15-7, and fell to #7 this week...one spot behind Laurel.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette rankings saw two team fall from their #1 perch. In addition to Clairton, AAAA pre-season #1 Liberty lost its opener. North Penn, which beat the defending state champs Friday night, take over the top spot this week.

Woodland Hills found out just how good Ohio football is on Saturday, losing to Steubenville 13-0 in the Friends of Coal Football Classic in Wheeling, West Virginia. The victory was the 62nd straight for Steubenville during the regular season. The last time the Big Red lost during the regular season was in the 2002 season. Fans of nationally-ranked Liberty are hoping that last night is deja vu all over again. For the second straight year, the Hurricanes have opened the season with a loss to North Penn. Last year's 23-15 season-opener loss woke-up the Hurricanes, who didn't lose the rest of the way on the way to the 2008 4A championship. The Intelligencer has the details of Friday night's blow-out 42-10 win by North Penn.
