Liberty is back in familiar territory. Saturday the Hurricanes beat George Washington 30-13 to advance to the Pennsylvania AAAA eastern championship game next week against North Penn. The Hurricanes only loss this year was to North Penn 23-15 during the opening week of the regular season. Liberty finished 2005 and 2006 as state runner-up. Click here for game story.

Pennsylvania High School Football Scoreboard - Thanksgiving Day

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

I said it all week long...throw out the records when it comes to Turkey Day high school football. Easton proved it Thursday beating arch-rival Phillipsburg (NJ) 35-14 in a game that saw the Red Rovers enter the contest with a 6-6 record and the Stateliners ready to play for a New Jersey state title next weekend.

Easton jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and never looked back taking a 57-40-5 lead in the all-time series. The victory was also the 131st of head coach Steve Shiffert's career, which ties him with Bob Rute for #1 on all-time victories list. Shiffert also equalled Rute's mark of 11 wins against the Liners. Shiffert is 11-4-1 all-time on Turkey Day.

Turkey Day Previews

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

As I mentioned earlier, it's hard for me to not put eastern Pennsylvania Turkey Day football at the top of my list when it comes to tradition. Some of the games, like Wilson-Nazareth and Emmaus-Whitehall have either disappeared or been move to the regular season because of the longer state playoffs.

Below you will find links to some of the backyard brawls that still exist.

Easton (PA) vs. Phillipsburg (NJ) Round 102

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

As most readers of The High School Football Huddle know, I'm partial to eastern Pennsylvania football. Year-in and year out it produces great teams. It may not put a lot of blue chippers on Rivals.com and Scout.com lists, but as far as team play goes, most of the top teams would be able to hold their own against competition from around the country.

Now on to what I believe is the best Thanksgiving Day football game...Easton (PA) vs. Phillipsburg, who will meet for the 102nd time on Thursday to grab bragging rights along the Delaware River, which is all that separates the two schools.

Plenty of tradition to go around as Phillipsburg is New Jersey's winningest program, while Easton is #2 in Pennsy.

Below you will find links to lots of stories from the Express-Times, which is the local paper that has covered this series which began on December 3, 1905 and has been played on every Thanksgiving since 1916. How big is the game...ESPN has aired it live twice.

Click here for a game preview story.

Serving-Up A Turkey and High School Football Feast

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the year when tradition reigns supreme in high school football. Yes, it truly is a day when records are thrown out the window and two teams battle for pride and bragging rights.

Some 40-years ago I attended my first-ever high school game, and can remember it like it was yesterday. The game was between my alma mater Wilson and it's hated Turkey Day rival Nazareth. The game then was played around 10 in the morning at Lehigh University's Taylor Stadium, which was a big treat for not only the players, but the fans. Kinda made you feel that you were in the big leagues.

Wilson and Nazareth no longer play each other, which saddens me, but there is talk of renewing the rivalry next year. Click here for that story from the Express-Times.

After freezing my butt off at Wilson and Nazareth, my parents then took me back to Lafayette College in Easton where I watched Easton battle Phillipsburg in the Battle of the Delaware. Two years ago, the Pennsylvania and New Jersey rivals played their 100th game in front of a national TV audience on ESPN.

Ahhh, the memories of watching two games within a six hour period! Helped build-up healthy appetite for the Thanksgiving meal!

Over the next couple of days, I'm going to be posting stories from around the country about the best Turkey Day high school football traditions.

Enjoy and don't eat too much!!

Bethel Park's first-ever WPIAL state football championship will be remembered for a long-time by Black Hawk fans. The #2 ranked Black Hawks used a rock solid defense to shutdown nationally-ranked Gateway (#3 USA Today) to advance to the state quarterfinals with a 10-6 victory at Heinz Field. Coming into the game, the Gators were averaging over 40-points a game and their lowest points total was 24. Click here for a game story.

WPIAL (PA) Championships Preview

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

I said it before, but with all due respect to other states, it's really hard to disagree that one of the toughest championships to win in high school football is a WPIAL title. Saturday, the 100 year old western Pennsylvania league will crown its four champs. Last year three (Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Thomas Jefferson and Jeannette) out of the state's four state champs came out of the WPIAL. Out of the three, only TJ is back to defend its title.

Thomas Jefferson will take on Blackhawk for the AAA at 5 o'clock.
The Cougars are coached by Joe Hamilton, who will be making his 11th WPIAL championship appearance. Hamilton brings a 4-6 record in title games into the contest. Hamilton, who's spent 43 years as a head football coach in the WPIAL is only one of two WPIAL coaches to win over 300-games in a career...the other Jim Render of Upper St. Clair.

Here's a look at tomorrow's quadruple-header at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field. Click on the games for previews from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Pennsylvania High School Football Scoreboard - 2nd Round Playoffs

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

WPIAL fans won't get the rematch they were hoping for in the AAAA championship game. Friday night, Bethel Park beat McKeesport 20-13 in the semifinals to advance to next week's title game against nationally-ranked Gateway at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Many had expected McKeesport to the final where it would try to avenge a regular season finale loss to the Gators. Click here for a game story.

A Story That Transcends Football

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Last week I talked about how disgusted I was when I read that the NY Times ran another story about former Hoover (AL) High head coach Rush Propst, who continues to receive publicity even though his track record seems to only fit into his "me-me" philosophy. So with that in mind, The High School Football Huddle is trying to find our readers the "good" stories.

Today, I found a great story about Avonworth (PA) running back Khiry Watts, who has helped his team to the WPIAL semfinals Friday night against Monaca. The story appears in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and focuses on Watts, who was adopted by Eric and Diane Templin as a freshman. Click here to read the story, and if you know of a great story that Huddle readers should know about, please feel free to email them to me at jeff@blitzgroupllc.com.

Enjoy,

Teams from the eastern part of Pennsylvania joined the party Friday night as the post-season came to schools east of the WPIAL. For the most part all the teams that were supposed to win...did. However, out west, defending PIAA Class AAAA champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic won't be back to defend its title. McKeesport beat the Vikings 28-6 to advance to next week's WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals where it will meet Bethel Park. Click here to read about McKeesport's quarterfinal victory.
