Prynor Narrows Choices To Six Schools

All of the scouting websites and plenty of chat rooms are buzzing about where Jeannette (PA) all-everything quarterback/defensive back Terrelle Pryor will play his college ball.

Today a published report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is telling the college football world that there are now six schools in the running...and that's from Pryor himself. Pryor, who's ranked the #1 player in the country by several scouting sources, told the paper that his decision is down to Ohio State, West Virginia, Florida, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas.

George Curry Becomes First in Pennsylvania to Win 400

During my TV life in Pennsylvania, George Curry was one of those head coaches you loved to hate. George was a tough old bird, who didn't shy away from "mixing it up" with the media. Covering Lehigh Valley football in the early 90's meant that the road to any state championship went right through the tiny town of Berwick, and that meant dealing with King George.

Today, I want to congratulate Coach Curry for quite a milestone...he coached his 400th victory from night when Wyoming Valley West beat Williamsport 41-7.

Curry is now one of only four active coaches in America in victory. At the head of the class is Summerville (SC) head man of 50-plus seasons, John McCissick who owns 547 wins heading into this weekend's game against Goose Creek. The other two head coaches with working with 400-plus wins are John Curtis, Jr. at John Curtis Christian (River Ridge, LA) and Larry Campbell of Lincoln County (Lincolnton, GA), who was the last the enter the exclusive club before Curry.

#25 Gateway Barely Avoids #2 Loss

Gateway, which is ranked #25 in the latest USA Today High School Football Poll, needed three touchdowns on kickoff returns...the last with less than a half minute remaining in the game...to escape with a 37-36 win over Norwin Friday night.

In a game that featured ten lead changes, Gateway (Monroeville, PA) needed a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Brian Williams to avoid the Gators second loss of the year. Gateway's Cameron Sadler also got into the special teams' act returning kickoffs for touchdowns earlier in the game. Sadler scored on returns of 90 and 82 yards.

Norwin almost pulled off the upset behind the combo of quarterback Alex Dennison and receiver Mike Shanahan. The two hooked-up on five touchdown passes in the game. The last, an 18-yarder, coming with under a minute to give Norwin a 36-31 lead.

Dennison completed 10-of-14 passes for 234 yards and scores of 31, 2, 7, 20 and 18 yards. For the game Shanahan caught eight balls for 159-yards.

Wilson's Win Streak Also Snapped

First defending 4A champ Upper St. Clair saw it's 19-game win streak snapped on Thursday, then 24-hours later defending 2A champ Wilson saw it's 19-gamer go down the drain.

The Warriors were shutout 28-0 by Salisbury in a game that saw the Falcons pick-off Wilson sophomore quarterback Tyler Smith seven times, while limiting him to just four completetions in 32 attempts.

For a complete game wrap, please click here for a story from The Morning Call.

North Allegheny Snaps Defending Champs Win Streak In Battle of Western Pennsylvania Powers

Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania's defending 4A champ, not only saw it's 19 game win streak go down the drained, but also suffered its worst home defeat at home Thursday night losing to North Allegheny 43-19.

North Allegheny used a punishing ground attack, amassing 307-yards on the ground, with two backs, Karl DeCiantis and Alex Papson, topping the century mark.

Last year, Upper St. Clair beat N-A twice on the way to the 4A state championship. Pennsylvania's longest active win streak now belongs to Wilson Area High School at 19. Upper St. Clair Vs. North Allegheny Preview

They're two of the best in the WPIAL and two of the best in the state, and Thursday night defending 4A state champ Upper St. Clair and North Allegheny will decide, on the field, who's the best.

Upper St. Clair is ranked #2 this week in the Patriot-News Pennsylvania 4A High School Football Rankings, while North Allegheny is #7. Last year USC beat North Allegheny twice on the way to its state championship, the second time coming in the WPIAL AAAA semis.

North Allegheny has done it with a good defense this year, allowing only 26 points in its first three wins.

New #1 In Class A Patriot-News High School Football Rankings

It may not have been as big as Independence's (Charlotte, NC) 109-game win streak going down the drain a couple of weeks ago, but Class A teams across the Keystone state were smiling Friday night after hearing the Southern Columbia's 27-game win streak was snapped in a 19-0 loss to Bloomsburg.

The loss knocked the Tigers out of the #1 spot in the latest Patriot-News High School Football Rankings. Southern Columbia fell to #6, one spot behind Bloomsburg, which entered the poll this week at #5.

The longest win streak in the state now belongs to Upper St. Clair and Wilson Borough, which have won 18 straight coming into this weekend.

Meanwhile, everything else is pretty much the same, although Gateway, the pre-season #1 in 4A climbed a couple of spots to #5 after rebounding with a win over former #5 McKeesport.

Here are the rest of the rankings, plus to read more about the end to Southern Columbia's win streak, please click on our headline "New #1 In Patriot-News High School Football Rankings".

High School Football Huddle In Eastern PA

The High School Football Huddle was in Eastern Pennsylvania Friday night to check out my alma mater Wilson High School. That's me on the sideline gathering some highlights.

The defending 2A champs didn't disappoint in a 38-7 win over Saucon Valley in Hellertown. The most impressive part of the victory was the play of sophomore quarterback Tyler Smith, who has some big shoes to fill. Smith, starting just his second varsity game, is taking over for four-year starter D.J. Lenehan, who's now at Toledo.

Smith completed 13-of-26 passes for a career high 213-yards and two touchdowns. Smith spread the ball around in head coach Bret Comp's Air-Raid attack, completing passes to seven receivers.

Wilson has now won 18 straight overall and 19 straight in the Colonial League.

Below you can check-out highlights of this sophomore that may end-up rewriting Wilson's record book, and make Wilson fans stop worrying about losing 18 key members of the 2006 state championship team.
