Joe Namath's High School Coach Dies

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

The headline says that he was Joe Namath's high school coach, but Larry Bruno was much more.

Bruno, who died on Christmas Eve, led Beaver Falls to a position of power in the WPIAL from 1959 to 1978.  In 20 years at the school, Bruno was 184-52-9, including a WPIAL Class AA championship in 1960...Namath was the quarterback of that 10-0 team.

Bruno, who also the head coach at Monaca for 10 years, was 88 years old.

Clairton Storms Back to Win Second Straight PIAA Class A Title

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

A 24-point deficit didn't matter to defending Class A champ Clairton in Friday's championship game against Riverside.

Riverside raced out to an incredible 24-0 first half lead, which shocked the crowd because coming into the game, the Bears had only allowed 34 points all season. However, the second half was all Clairton as they scored 36 unanswered points to win 36-30 and push its win streak to 31 straight wins.

Easton Loses to Phillipsburg in OT in the Snow

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

The only points in the 104th renewal of the Easton/Phillipsburg rivalry came on the last play of the game.

On a snowy day at Lafayette College, P'burg's Anthony Castro stroked a 25-yard field goal in the first overtime to give the Stateliners a 3-0 victory over their arch-rival.  Easton, which still has to play a district championship game Saturday against Whitehall, had won the last three games in the series.

Pius X Royals Lose in District 11 Title Game

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

The 2010 Pius X Royals football season came to a close Saturday night with 37-14 loss to Schuylkill Haven in the District 11 Class A championship game.

The victory snapped the Royals eight-game win streak that came on-the-heels of an 0-3 start. Pius finishes the season with an 8-4 record and the All-American Conference championship.

Throughout the season, High School Football America has been following the Royals, who are one of the smallest 11-man teams in the country with video vignettes. You can check them out at www.highschoolfootballamerica.com.

Pius X Wins 8th in a Row to Advance to District Final

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

Tower City, PA - In Week 11 you can't call a team young anymore.  However, a team made-up of mostly underclassmen (7 seniors, 44 juniors, sophomore and freshman), can come of age with each-and-every snap.

Saturday night in the District 11 Class A playoffs, the third-seed Pius X Royals, who are part of my season-long feature at my other website High School Football America, grew-up in a hurry with a come-from-behind win over #2 seed Williams Valley in enemy territory.

Riding the arms and legs of 14-year old freshman quarterback AJ Long, the Royals outscored Williams Valley 42-35 to advance to next Saturday's district final against top-seed Schuylkill Valley, which beat Shenandoah Valley 29-14.

Long amassed 421 yards in total offense with 357 yards through the air and 64 on the ground. Long, who completed passes to seven different receivers, was 22 of 34 with four touchdowns.

Junior receiver Matt Camilletti, who caught six of Long's completions, became the Royals all-time leading receiver. Camilletti, who now has 120 career receptions, passed Wade Williams (Class of '08), who had 115 catches in three seasons. Williams was a two-time 1st Team All-Stater during his career in Roseto.

The Royals, who have now won eight straight after an 0-3 start, trailed 35-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Pius tied the game at 35 when Long connected with Josh LaBar on a 26-yard touchdown pass. They then took the lead with 5:51 to go in the game when Long tossed his four touchdown pass to George Dalessandro on a 76 yard catch-and-run.

The game was iced when linebacker Adrian Bernard sacked Viking quarterback Mason Shomper with a little over a minute to play.

The Road to Hershey technically began last week in the western part of the state with the WPIAL playoffs beginning, but for the rest of the Keystone State, it begins this weekend.

Here's a look at SportsPower.com's latest power rankings at the conclusion of the regular season.

Thanks to all of my readers who have made the 2010 season our best yet!!

It's time for the second season, and with it comes an exciting partnership for High School Football America that will help my readers get the best info on the Pennsylvania playoffs.

We're working with EasternPAFootball.com, a great website that was started by Dave Miklas over a decade ago.  Mika also has a sister-site WesternPAFootball.net.

Please check-out both sites that will give you the most up-to-date information on the postseason.

Pius X 14-year old Sets New Pennsylvania Freshman Passing Record

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

The Pius X Royals closed-out their regular season in high-style Saturday beating East Juniata 49-28 to win the All-America Conference football.

Not only was it the Royals seventh straight win after an 0-3 start, but 14-year old freshman quarterback A.J. Long set a new state record for passing yards for a freshman. Long threw for 330 yards and five touchdowns giving him a season total of 2,273 yards.

Long has completed 67% of his passes by connecting on 159 of 236 tosses. He's also only thrown five interceptions while tossing 23 touchdowns.

Depending on how deep the Royals can go in the playoffs, Long could approach the national freshman record of 3,309 yards set in 2007 by Maty Mauk, who is currently a junior quarterback at Kenton High School in Ohio.

Pennsylvania High School Football Scores - Week 9

by Jeff Fisher
Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle

I saw a first on Saturday...an 11-man football team playing with only 11 players.

Carson Long Military Institute suited-up only players in Saturday's game against Pius X in New Bloomfield. The Warriors didn't have much of a chance in their 66-24 loss to the Royals, who won their sixth straight game to improve to 6-3.  However, Carson Long did give Royals a lesson in heart, while the Royals showed the fans the meaning of sportsmanship.

Carson Long's Warriors played like warriors going both ways for all 48 minutes.   Royals head coach Phil Stambaugh showed respect to his fellow head coach Pete Lasavage by running a modified version of his high-power passing offense and opening rooting for Carson Long's players during their valiant effort.

The 24 points were the most scored in a game this season by Carson Long, which has been shutout five times this year.

Kudos to both coaches, who showed class, in every sense of the word, in the face of a very difficult situation!
