It's a known fact that the WPIAL teams have a tough road to the state tournament.  Especially in the Class AAAA bracket where some of the state's best beat-up on each other for the right for WPIAL gold and automatic berth into the state semifinals.

Last night, nationally-ranked Pittsburgh Central Catholic (#12 USA Today) saw its perfect season go up-in-smoke with a 28-14 loss to Upper St. Clair in the semifinals.  Playing without its starting quarterback, Dakota Conwell, USC used first-time starter Pete Coughlin, who rushed for 209 yards and passed for 61 to hand the Vikings their second straight WPIAL semifinal loss.

The win the 354th of Jim Render's career, who is third on the state's all-time wins list.

Next week, Upper St. Clair will play defending state champ North Allegheny for the WPIAL AAAA title.

In Pottsville last night, Allentown Central Catholic's Kevin Gulyas became the state's all-time leading receiver in catches and yards in the Vikings 49-7 District XI championship game win over Pottsville.

Gulyas, who had 11 receptions for 163 yards, now has 232 catches in his career for 3,726 yards.

The defending Class AAA champs advance to the state quarterfinals where they'll face the winner of Saturday's game between Dallas and Valley View.

After a 5-5 regular season, the Vikings have outscored their playoff opponents 104-28.
