New WPIAL Football Alignment Announced

The WPIAL announced its 2010-11 football alignments, which includes five new teams for next fall.

The five new WPIAL teams are: Erie McDowell, Altoona, Central Valley (merger of Monaca and Center), Hollidaysburg and Our Lady of Sacred Heart.

Below are the new conference alignments with the top four teams moving on to the post-season.

WPIAL Class AAAA

Northern Seven -- Butler, Erie McDowell, North Allegheny, North Hills, Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley, Shaler.

Foothills -- Connellsville, Gateway, Hempfield, Latrobe, McKeesport, Norwin, Penn-Trafford.

Butler Still Searching for New Head Football Coach

Butler Area High School will close the application process for a new head football coach next Friday.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that officials are looking an experienced head coach to take over the AAAA program. The search began in the middle of December after the school district voted not to retain Jeff McAnallen after an 0-9 season.

Today the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette looks into its crystal ball to check-out the Class of 2012, which is looking pretty good with sophomores, who are already making an impact on the WPIAL scene.

WPIAL Discusses Statewide Classification Expansion

Officials from WPIAL schools attended two different meetings this week to discuss the PIAA's proposed expansion to six classifications in football for the 2010 season. Two of the options discussed in the fact-finding meetings were...go along with the change and move the WPIAL's championship games out of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh or pull-out of the playoffs and keep four championship games at Heinz.

WPIAL (PA) Championships Preview

I said it before, but with all due respect to other states, it's really hard to disagree that one of the toughest championships to win in high school football is a WPIAL title. Saturday, the 100 year old western Pennsylvania league will crown its four champs. Last year three (Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Thomas Jefferson and Jeannette) out of the state's four state champs came out of the WPIAL. Out of the three, only TJ is back to defend its title.

Thomas Jefferson will take on Blackhawk for the AAA at 5 o'clock.
The Cougars are coached by Joe Hamilton, who will be making his 11th WPIAL championship appearance. Hamilton brings a 4-6 record in title games into the contest. Hamilton, who's spent 43 years as a head football coach in the WPIAL is only one of two WPIAL coaches to win over 300-games in a career...the other Jim Render of Upper St. Clair.

Pennsylvania Playoffs Begin

The eastern half of Pennsylvania wraps-up the regular season Friday night, while the western half of the state begins the post-season.

The WPIAL takes center stage out west with some of the best teams in the state ready to take one of the toughest trips to the state title games in Hershey in December. The WPIAL champ wins a spot in the state semifinals.

In the latest Patriot-News high school football rankings, three WPIAL teams are ranked #1 going into the post-season. Gateway, which ranked #3 by USA Today, is the top dog in AAAA, while Thomas Jefferson is #1 in Class AAA and Beaver Falls is ranked #1 in AA. Steelton-Highspire in Harrisburg is #1 team in the state's small classification.

#4 Gateway Outlasts McKeesport to Complete Undefeated Regular Season

For the first time since 1986 Gateway (#4 USA Today Super 25) finished the regular season undefeated. Thursday night, the Gators (9-0) scored the first 28-points of the game and then held-on for a 31-27 win against McKeesport (7-2), which gave them the Foothills Conference championship.

Gateway will now receive the top seed for the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs, which begin next week. There's a good chance that these two will meet again in five weeks for the right to go to Hershey for the state title game.

#4 Gateway Faces McKeesport in Western PA Showdown Thursday

The Gateway Gators haven't really been challenged this year on the way to an 8-0 start. That should all change Friday night when the Gators (8-1) face McKeesport (7-1) in the WPIAL regular season finale.

Gateway (#4 USA Today Super 25) has won its game by an average of over 38 points, and has scored over 50 points twice, while topping the 40 point mark in seven of its eight games. It's closest game came two weeks ago when it beat Erie McDowell 30-18. McKeesport lost its season opener 14-7 in overtime to Colerain (OH), which had been nationally-ranked until it lost its first game two weeks ago.

Jets Darrelle Revis Making Aliquippa Proud

Add the name of Darrelle Revis to the list of Aliquippa alums to play in the NFL. The Jets second-year cornerback is the subject of a new piece in today's New York Times.

Revis is hoping to have a successful NFL career like former Quip Mike Ditka, who played his way into Pro Football's Hall of Fame. Other NFL players from Aliquippa are Ty Law, Danny Rains, Sean Gilbert and Paul Posluszny.

Penn Hills Knocks-off Defending State Champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic

Defending Class 4A state champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic (4-2, 1-1) saw its 27-game conference win streak come to an end Thursday night 30-7 at the hands of Penn Hills (3-3, 2-0).

Thomas Jefferson Wins Pennsylvania 3A Gold

Thomas Jefferson is once again the best in Pennsylania's AAA class. T-J beat Garnet Valley 28-3 in Friday championship game, clinching the Jaguars second state high school football championship in four years.

Thomas Jefferson did it on both sides of the ball, rolling up 468 yards in total offense while the defense limited Garnet Valley to just 111 yards rushing.

#15 Pittsburgh Central Catholic Beats Gateway 35-34 in OT in WPIAL AAAA Final

No matter what happens around the country over the next month, Friday night's WPIAL AAAA Championship game may go down as the best finish to a championship high school football games this year.

With less than 90 seconds to play, and Pittsburgh Central Catholic leading Gateway 21-13 PCC defensive back Emmanuele Matthews picked off a pass and returned it 85-yards for a Viking touchdown and a 28-13 lead with 62 seconds to play. But 62 seconds was all Gateway needed to send the game to overtime.

First the Gators scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Rob Kalkstein to close the gap to 28-20 with 31 seconds left. Then the Gators recovered an on-side kick. The comeback was completed when Gateway dug into its bag of tricks using a Kalkstein pass to Jonanthan Pryor to the 12 and just before Pryor was tackled he lateraled the ball to Cam Sadler who ran into the end zone with just one second left. The two point conversion sent the game into overtime.

Gateway scored first in OT, but missed the extra point and that was all Pittsburgh Central Catholic needed to win its third WPIAL title in five years. PCC won 35-34 on a made extra point.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic, which is ranked #15 by USA Today, is now 13-0 and advances to the Pennsylvania state quarterfinals. Gateway began the season ranked by USA Today, but lost its opener to another nationally-ranked team, Cardinal Mooney, in the Ohio vs. USA Challenge.

Top Recruit Terelle Pryor Leads Jeannette to WPIAL AA Title

For the first time since the late 80's a school has finally captured back-to-back WPIAL titles. Jeannette and the nation's #1 recruit Terrelle Pryor blasted Beaver Falls 61-12 on Friday to win the WPIAL Class AA title.

Pryor rushed for 166 yards and was 5-of-6 passing for 81 yards and accounted for four touchdowns. The Jayhawks rolled-up 449 yards in total offense.

Jeannette, which finished as the AA state runner-up, moves on to the state quarterfinals next week.

Serra Catholic Wins WPIAL Class A Crown

Serra Catholic finally allowed a playoff touchdown, but it didn't matter as won its first WPIAL title since 1981 with a 10-6 win against Springdale in the Class A title game.

All Serra Catholic needed for a 53-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Heatherington to Chris Loving and Nick Rossi 23-yard field goal. The touchdown that Serra allowed was on a blocked put in the Eagle end zone, so that means the SC defense is still unscored upon in the playoffs.

#15 Pittsburgh Central Catholic Ready For WPIAL Showdown With Gateway

If it wasn't for Gateway's (Monroeville, PA) season opening loss to nationally-ranked Cardinal Mooney in the Ohio Vs. USA, Friday night's showdown for the WPIAL AAAA championship would feature two undefeated and nationally-ranked teams.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic (12-0) enters the game ranked #15 by USA Today and #1 in the state of Pennsylvania. Gateway is #2 in the latest Harrisburgh Patriot-News rankings. The last time Gateway played for a WPIAL championship was back in 2004 when the Gators lost to PCC 28-0.

One of the interesting stories for Central Catholic this year has been the play of a guy that has more hockey blood running through his veins than football. His name is Andrew Taglianetti, whose father was a defenseman on the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup champion teams in the early 90's.

Taglianetti has put up some unbelievable numbers this year, especially on offense where he's been used as a tailback and wide receiver. When he touches the ball something usually happens.

In the WPIAL playoffs he has an 83-yard today run in the semifinals and a 99-yard touchdown catch and run in the Vikings quarterfinal win over Bethel Park. His per touch average this year is an incredible 17.02 yards, which breaks out to 880 yards on 60 carries and 12 catches for 346 yards. He's totaled 13 touchdowns (9 rushing, 3 receiving & 1 Int. Return).
