I got the juices flowing for the 2011 season with a trip back home to Easton this week.
After a visiting with family, I played in the annual Pius X Golf Tournament at Mountain Manor in Marshall's Creek last Sunday, and then spent two-days with head coach Phil Stambaugh as he put his team through preseason drills in plenty of heat and humidity in Roseto.
Stambaugh has high hopes as he enters his second season as head coach at his alma mater. Last year the Royals went 8-4.
Now, Stambaugh's eight wins doesn't put him on any all-time wins list, but I thought I'd do a little research this weekend on coaches that have a shot at reaching a victory milestone this season...the 300 Win Club.
A couple of coaches have shots at entering the exclusive club that has only nine Pennsylvania coaches.
Jim Algeo, head coach at Lansdale Catholic since 1969, enters the season nine wins short of 300. Algeo brings a 291-176-15 record into this season.
In the middle of the state Tim Rimpfel of Cumberland Valley needs a 12-victory season to get to 300. Rimpfel enters the 2011 season with a record of 288-94-3.
Other possible milestones this year...Jack Henzes of Dunmore High, who Pennsylvania's second winningest coach, is three wins from 350 and Jim Rendor of Upper St. Clair is seven short of the 350 victory mark.

Jim Thorpe High School's nickname is the Olympians, however, this season school officials may want to think about changing it to the Road Warriors.
Why you ask?
Well, the school and town, which bears the name of the Olympic great Jim Thorpe will not play an "official" home football game this year.
School officials have decided that the team will play all of its home games at nearby Panther Valley High School's football field in Lansford this year while the team's regular home field undergoes repairs.
The Olympians will play Friday night "home games" on September 9th against Line Mountain, September 16th against North Schuylkill and October 7th against Minersville. There will be two Saturday "home games" on October 15th against Mahanoy Area and October 22nd against Schuylkill Haven.
The Jim Thorpe School District will spend approximately $260,000 to completely refurbish its current football field that has had a drainage problem since opening 10 years ago.

The former Penn-Trafford head coach is now the new head coach at Norwin. The Post-Gazette reports Tragesser has had a lot of success in his 24-years as a head coach.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that officials are looking an experienced head coach to take over the AAAA program. The search began in the middle of December after the school district voted not to retain Jeff McAnallen after an 0-9 season.

The Patriot-News reports that Lancaster Catholic claimed to the 2A championship by battling back from two early Greensburg CC scores in the first quarter.

Thursday's showed between Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Upper St. Clair will no longer be a battle of unbeatens. Mt. Lebanon (2-1) upset the Vikings 36-21 Saturday night. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the game details.

by Jeff Fisher Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle Time to give the little guys a little "pub" today. In the battle of AA powers out west last night #1 Beaver Falls beat #2 Aliquippa 21-14. It was a rematch of the WPIAL championship game won by Aliquippa last season 8-6. Check-out the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for the game story of Beaver Falls running back Cody Cook, who carried the ball 37-times in victory.

Three of the four #1 teams in the Patriot-News opened the season with wins to maintain their positions in the first regular season poll. Clairton, the pre-season top dawg in A, lost to Laurel 15-7, and fell to #7 this week...one spot behind Laurel.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette rankings saw two team fall from their #1 perch. In addition to Clairton, AAAA pre-season #1 Liberty lost its opener. North Penn, which beat the defending state champs Friday night, take over the top spot this week.

By Jeff Fisher The High School Football Huddle Parkland began the season ranked #25 by USA Today, but dropped it's first two games. Friday night, the Trojans (6-3) made-up for its rough start knocking Emmaus (#8A AAAA team in PA) from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 14-10. Emmaus' loss coupled with Liberty's 42-0 win over Easton, sets-up a Week 10 showdown for the Lehigh Valley Conference title. Liberty will play Freedom for the outright title in their annual season-ending grudge match.

LaSalle's 27-26 win over West Catholic drops the Burrs from #1 to #4 in the latest Patriot-News High School Football Rankings. Unbeaten Beaver Falls takes over the top spot, moving up one spot from last week.
In the other classes, nationally-ranked Gateway remains #1 in Class AAAA, Thomas Jefferson is still #1 in AAA and Steelton-Highspire has the top spot in A.

Officials have announced the Pennsylvania roster for the 51st Big 33 Classic that will be played in Hershey, Pennsylvania on June 14th. The game, which many consider the best all-star game in America, pits stars from Pennsylvania against stars from Ohio.
One of the footnotes of the game is the fact that there's never been a Super Bowl played without a Big 33 alum involved.
This year the PA stars will be led by Parkland High School's Jim Morgans. The nation's top recruit Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette has been chosen, but there's no word on whether he will play in the game. In the past he has said he won't play.
