There's nothing like the energy of state tournament football!

I was in Pennsylvania tonight for the showdown between two top-notch Class A teams.  Pius X and Southern Columbia both entered their quarterfinal match-up with identical 12-1 records, with both schools' losses coming at the hands of bigger schools.

Pius lost to Quad-A University Prep in Week 6, while SC lost to Double-A Mount Carmel.  University advanced to the first round of the 4A state tourney, while Mount Carmel has a meeting with Lancaster Catholic in Saturday's AA quarters.

Pius X raced-out to a 19-7 second quarter lead behind sophomore quarterback A.J. Long's 44th and 45th touchdown passes this season.  But, after that, it was all Southern Columbia.  The Tigers outscored the Royals 48-6 the rest of the way to advance to the state semifinals with 55-25 victory.

Southern Columbia, which is now 6-0 all-time against Pius, is going after its 7th state title in 22 years since Pennsylvania began playing for state titles.

Pius X Wins District XI Class A Title

Sometimes things can't be explained; like why was today's District XI Class A playoff game played on what would have been the 80th birthday of the man that the Pius X Royals dedicated their season to.

The Royals have dedicated the 2011 season to their longtime fan John "Pappy" Hildabrant, who passed away during preseason camp in August.  Today, the Royals went after District XI Class A gold against Shenandoah Valley at Nazareth on what would have been "Pappy's" 80th birthday.

With the memory of "Pappy" in their minds and his name on the back of their helmets, the Royals dismantled the Blue Devils 50-12.  The Royals finished second in the district the past two years.

The Royals were led by quarterback A.J. Long and Boise Ross.  Long, who broke the record for TDs in a season (37), was 10 of 17 for 206 yards and two touchdowns.  The sophomore QB also rushed for 173 yards on 13 carries and two scores.

Ross, a junior, scored three touchdowns; he only had six touches, but put-up 276 yards in total offense.  Ross caught four passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball twice for 110 yards and a touchdown.

The Royals finished the game with 562 yards in total offense.

Next week, Pius X will play Calvary Christian in the opening round of the PIAA state playoffs.

When the Royals returned to their home base of Roseto, the entire team stopped at the Mount Carmel Cemetery to place a gold medal at Pappy's gravesite.

Pius X Wins 8th in a Row to Advance to District Final

Tower City, PA - In Week 11 you can't call a team young anymore.  However, a team made-up of mostly underclassmen (7 seniors, 44 juniors, sophomore and freshman), can come of age with each-and-every snap.

Saturday night in the District 11 Class A playoffs, the third-seed Pius X Royals, who are part of my season-long feature at my other website High School Football America, grew-up in a hurry with a come-from-behind win over #2 seed Williams Valley in enemy territory.

Riding the arms and legs of 14-year old freshman quarterback AJ Long, the Royals outscored Williams Valley 42-35 to advance to next Saturday's district final against top-seed Schuylkill Valley, which beat Shenandoah Valley 29-14.

Long amassed 421 yards in total offense with 357 yards through the air and 64 on the ground. Long, who completed passes to seven different receivers, was 22 of 34 with four touchdowns.

Junior receiver Matt Camilletti, who caught six of Long's completions, became the Royals all-time leading receiver. Camilletti, who now has 120 career receptions, passed Wade Williams (Class of '08), who had 115 catches in three seasons. Williams was a two-time 1st Team All-Stater during his career in Roseto.

The Royals, who have now won eight straight after an 0-3 start, trailed 35-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Pius tied the game at 35 when Long connected with Josh LaBar on a 26-yard touchdown pass. They then took the lead with 5:51 to go in the game when Long tossed his four touchdown pass to George Dalessandro on a 76 yard catch-and-run.

The game was iced when linebacker Adrian Bernard sacked Viking quarterback Mason Shomper with a little over a minute to play.

Pius X 14-year old Sets New Pennsylvania Freshman Passing Record

The Pius X Royals closed-out their regular season in high-style Saturday beating East Juniata 49-28 to win the All-America Conference football.

Not only was it the Royals seventh straight win after an 0-3 start, but 14-year old freshman quarterback A.J. Long set a new state record for passing yards for a freshman. Long threw for 330 yards and five touchdowns giving him a season total of 2,273 yards.

Long has completed 67% of his passes by connecting on 159 of 236 tosses. He's also only thrown five interceptions while tossing 23 touchdowns.

Depending on how deep the Royals can go in the playoffs, Long could approach the national freshman record of 3,309 yards set in 2007 by Maty Mauk, who is currently a junior quarterback at Kenton High School in Ohio.

The first score of the day comes from Roseto, Pennsylvania where the Pius X Royals reached the .500 mark with their third straight victory...a 57-0 win over Lourdes.

The Royals (3-3, 2-0 All-American Conference) only ran 27 offensive plays with junior running back Nick DeRea rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns and freshman quarterback AJ Long completing all 13 passes he threw.  Long tossed for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

All-season long, High School Football America is documenting the progress of one of the smallest high school football teams in the country playing the 11-man game.  Pius has 63 boys enrolled in grades 9-12, but 50 of them play football for the tiny catholic school in northeast Pennsylvania.

The biggest story of the day involves another District 11 team...Mahanoy Area.  The Golden Bears beat Carson Long 54-0 to win their third game within the last eight days.  

A scheduling quirk that gave Mahanoy Area a bye in Week 2, meant they had to play Minersville last Saturday and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech on Wednesday.  The Golden Bears beat Minersville 14-3 and CMVT 33-14.

Pennsylvania High School Football Scores - Week 5

After 10-years of traveling thousands of miles in search of opponents as an independent football team, the Pius X Royals began a new chapter Saturday with a 57-14 win over Bucktail in the team's first-ever game in the All-American Conference.

A turnover in the Royals' opening series resulted in Bucktail taking an 8-0 lead. Pius then put-up 43 unanswered points, but first-year head coach Phil Stambaugh wasn't happy with his young team's first half performance.

"Too many mental mistakes," said Stambaugh after the Royals improved to 2-3 with its second straight win. "This team is young, but we're now five games into the season. We need to improve every week if we stand a chance to achieve our goal of qualifying for the District 11 playoffs.

14-year old freshman quarterback AJ Long shook-off the opening drive fumble to complete 13-of-17 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Matt Camilletti caught two of the TD throws. Sophomore running back Boise Ross rushed for 99 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown; he also scored on a 58 yard punt return to start the second half.

2010 Pius X Football Story at High School Football America

What a difference a week makes when you're a young football program.

Last week, I was writing about how a youthful Pius X football team was struggling to find its mark after an 0-3 start.  Today, I'm happy to say that Friday night's big 62-36 win over arch-rival Marian Catholic has ignited first-year head coach Phil Stambaugh's team as it gets ready for Saturday's game against Bucktail.

It will be Hall of Fame Day in Roseto tomorrow when the school inducts former players Shawn Brice (Class of 2005) and Quintin Lopez (Class of 2006) into the Pius X High School Athletic Hall of Fame along with the entire 1966 football team.

Tomorrow will also mark Pius' first league game in a decade.  This year, the smallest football team in Pennsylvania, became members of the All-American Conference after playing the past decade as an independent and traveling thousands of miles to find games.

2010 Pius X Football Story at High School Football America

Pius X (1-3) head coach Phil Stambaugh picked-up his first career coaching victory Friday with a solid 62-36 win over arch-rival Marian Catholic (1-3).

Stambaugh, who was an All-American quarterback at Lehigh University and played in the NFL and NFL Europe, is extremely pleased with the development of his freshman quarterback AJ Long, who passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more in the victory.

The very young Pius squad, only seven seniors on the roster, is 0-2 heading into its Week 3 game against Schuylkill Valley.  This will be the first road contest for first year head coach Phil Stambaugh's 2010 squad, who talked about the difference in preparing for a road game on a short week in our weekly podcast below.

High School Football America: 2010 Pius X High School Football Story - Game 1

All season long, High School Football America is giving its readers an inside look at the Pius X High School football program.  Pius is one of the smallest high school in America playing 11-man football.  

There are less than 90 boys in the school...50 of them play football.

Roseto, PA - The Pius X  Royals showed just how young they are in Saturday's season opening 27-20 loss to Pottstown on a beautiful afternoon in Roseto.

With senior co-captain Zack Cinelli sitting-on the sidelines with crutches from season-ending knee surgery on Wednesday, the Royals fought hard, but couldn't overcome mental and physical errors against the Trojans, who are a 3A program from southeastern Pennsylvania. 

Pottstown put the ball on the ground with nine fumbles in the game, but the Royals only came-up with four of them.  On defense, the Royals allowed 508 yards in total offense with Trojan running backs Marc Smith and Malik Brinkley each topping the 200 yard rushing mark....Brinkley rushed for 221 and Smith 219 yards.

In spite of the inconsistent play, the Royals did have a lot of positives, starting with the fact that they bounced back from every Trojan score to keep the game within reach into the fourth quarter. 

That was a good sign for head coach Phil Stambaugh, who was making his head coaching debut at his alma matter.  The Royals are playing a lot of juniors, sophomores and freshman...most of them being inexperienced at the varsity level.  With Cinelli out, the Royals only have seven seniors on the roster.

Freshman quarterback AJ Long showed flashes of future ability completing 18 of 25 passes for 191 yards; he also ran for 58 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.

Senior co-captain George Dalessandro played a solid all-around game; catching four balls for 78 yards, plus he caught Smith from behind at the Royal 1-yard line on what would have been a 90-yard touchdown run.  Smith fumbled the ball on Dalessandro's tackle...the ball rolled-out of the end zone for a touchback.

For his efforts, Dalessandro won the Matt Casciano Memorial Game MVP trophy.

Camp Royal at Pius X High School

Due to a technical snafu at Blogger, the Pennsylvania High School Football Huddle was down for three days, but we're back and boy do we have tons of stuff to tell you about.

As I told you last week, I took the High School Football America cameras to Roseto for an inside look at the "tiny school on the hill"...the Pius X Royals.

We spent three days embedded in the program with first-year head coach Phil Stambaugh to learn what makes this Class A football program with an enrolled of 260 students between the 7th and 12th grades tick.

Having grown-up in the Lehigh Valley in nearby Wilson Borough, I knew this was a special community, but boy, it's more than just close.

While the make-up of the community of 1,600 has changed been changing recently, at its core, it is still basically made-up of Italian-Americans.  Within that core is another core...those that bleed blue-and-white for Pius X High School.

The Loyal Royals, as they're known, may be the most welcoming group of people I've ever met!  They look forward to cheering for the same names they've cheered for for decades.  Names like Cinelli, Casciano and Goffredo...to name a few.

Family STILL matters here!  And High School Football America is proud to introduce you to the Pius X Royals Family over the next several months.

Like the line in the song from the TV series Cheers...everyone knows your name...but, in the case of Roseto, I'd add they're PROUD to know your name.

Pius X Finds a Home

As I told you on Wednesday, I will be going inside the Pius X football program this year with in-depth look at Phil Stambaugh's first-year as head coach of his alma mater.

One of the big stories at the start of the season is that the Royals, for the first time since 1999, have a league to call their own.  After playing a decade as an independent, which carries all kinds of scheduling problems, Pius X is now part of the six-team All-America League that includes Bucktail, Carson Long Military Academy, Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, East Juniata and Lourdes.

In the late 90's, the Royals were part of the Mid-Penn League, and won three straight championships from 1997 through 1999.  For years Pius has tried to join the Colonial League, which includes Slate Belt neighbors Bangor and Pen Argyl, but the Royals have been rejected every time.

Earlier this week, Pocono Record sports reporter Joe Miegoc spoke with Stambaugh about what being part of a league means to his program.

High School Football America to give its readers the "Royal" treatment

As I contemplated what I could do special for the 2010 high school football season, one thought came to mind...think SMALL!

Yes, I said SMALL.

You see, as I’ve been telling my readers for the past year, High School Football America is all about covering good stories.  It’s almost like we’re miners looking for those hidden gems of high school football stories that are buried deep beneath national rankings and recruiting stories.

So with that in mind, I wracked my brain for something small that could be turned into something big. 

It didn’t take me long to come-up with the answer.

I wanted to chronicle a small town football team for an entire year to give fans a feel for how the line between a community and its football team blurs, and the team becomes part of the fabric of the community.

But the question was which team?

Once again, it didn’t take long to come-up with the answer.

I just had to look a little north of my hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania to the tiny borough of Roseto…home to the Pius X Royals, a small catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 260 students in 7-12 grades.  The Royals play in Pennsylvania’s smallest classification (Class A). 

That definitely qualifies as small, but what the school and the football program have accomplished through the years in sports is big, including an NFL quarterback in Phil Stambaugh…and that’s where the story begins.

Stambaugh, who just celebrated his 32nd birthday on Tuesday, is preparing to open his first camp as a head coach at his alma mater on Monday, August 16th…and High School Football America will be there with him.

Even after spending time as a quarterback in the NFL and NFL Europe, Stambaugh is your typical Pius X alum…once a Royal, always a Royal.

What seems to make this story feel right is Stambaugh and I have a history that includes me covering him while I worked at WFMZ-TV while he was leading his team to a 1995 District 11 Class A championship, plus his brilliant career at Lehigh University where he spent his four years re-writing school and Patriot League record books.

What appeals the most to me about Pius is how it truly is a family affair for the approximately 1,600 people that reside in the community. 

Like Stambaugh, eight of his eleven assistant coaches attended the “old school” brick school building on 3^rd Avenue.  Heck...Stambaugh’s mom Connie currently is the athletic director at the school.  His dad, Mike, coached football, volleyball, girls’ softball and wrestling at Pius.

Roseto is a little bit like the imaginary TV show bar Cheers…everyone knows your name.

After a successful career with the Royals, Stambaugh went-on to a great career at Lehigh University.

The Express-Times is reporting that Pius X head coach Rob Goffredo is stepping down after eight years at the Roseto school.

Goffredo compiled a 51-30 overall record with the Royals.
